 MSA University, 6thOctober City, Cairo, EgittoChristine Daae è stata portata all'Opera di Parigi quando suo padre, famoso musicista, muore improvvisamente, dicendole che manderà il suo angelo della musica per prendersi cura di lei. Lei cresce e scopre di sentire una voce che le parla e le insegna a cantare. Christine crede che sia l'angelo della musica ma in realtà è un genio sfigurato, il Fantasma, che nel frattempo si innamora di lei. Anche se lei è affascinata e attratta dal fantasma, si innamora del suo amore d'infanzia, il visconte de Changy o Raoul. Il fantasma spanenta follemente geloso, rapisce Christine e minaccia di uccidere Raoul. Lei, per salvare Raoul, accetta di sposare il Fantasma e lo bacia. Ma il Fantasma si rende conto di quello che ha fatto e lascia andare Christine con Raoul, scomparendo per sempre. Although she is fascinated and attracted by the phantom, she falls in love with her childhood sweetheart, the viscount de Changy or Raoul. The Phantom gets madly jealous, kidnaps Christine and threatens to kill Raoul. In order to save Raoul, she agrees to marry the Phantom and kisses him. But he then realizes what he has done, so he decides to let her go to Raoul, and disappears for ever. Una parte di me amava il personaggio del Fantasma, a prescindere da tutte le complessità legate alla deformazione del viso. Ma Christine – la ragazza del coro – si innamora del suo misterioso talento, non del Fantasma in sé. Quando decisi di metterlo in scena in Egitto, tutti mi consigliarono di non farlo dati gli illustri precedenti di Broadway. Ma, nonostante ciò, ero certa della mia scelta; restava però un dubbio: come realizzare un'opera del genere con un gruppo di studenti universitari? Questa è stata la sfida più dura! Abbiamo ricevuto il pieno supporto del prof. Nawal ElDegwi – il Presidente del Consiglio di Amministrazione dell'Università – un appassionato di belle arti. Il prof. Nawal ElDegwi ha accompagnato il gruppo teatrale nel corso delle prove, sostenendo e motivando ogni studente della MSA. Il vero sostegno del gruppo è stato lo spirito che univa questo gruppo di studenti della MSA così ambiziosi, entusiasti e pieni di talento e la loro docente di teatro, la prof. Noha Amin, che ha svolto un ruolo chiave nella produzione dello spettacolo. E così siamo riusciti a raggiungere il nostro obiettivo in Egitto. La nostra rappresentazione è stata la prima produzione musicale nel Medio Oriente realizzata da studenti universitari, che è stata ripetuta durante quattro serate nella sala principale del Teatro Lirico del Cairo, sotto l'egida di Sua Eccellenza Suzanne Mubarak – la first lady dell'Egitto. Il ricavato dello spettacolo è stato donato al progetto egiziano no profit "Contribuisci a creare 100 scuole", perché crediamo davvero nel servizio civile. Nel dipartimento culturale dell'Università MSA, gli studenti hanno la possibilità di mettere in mostra il proprio talento, creando nuovi personaggi ed ampliando le loro abilità attraverso continue esibizioni presso il Teatro Romano della MSA, il Teatro Lirico della MSA e il Teatro Lirico del Cairo. L'opportunità che ci è stata offerta di partecipare al festival culturale "Universo Teatro" è per noi un grande onore, nonché una meravigliosa opportunità per entrare in contatto con culture spanerse e studenti universitari provenienti da aree geografiche così lontane. Sono sicura che resterete affascinati dalle performance musicali del gruppo teatrale dell'Università MSA e, credeteci o meno, il fantasma esiste davvero…Buona visione! Sherin El-Mosallamy Regista/ Responsabile del Dipartimento Cultura della MSA The University Theatre Company I have always been a big fan of Gaston Leroux's novel "The Phantom of the Opera" since I was very young. A piece of me loved the Phantom character, despite all the complications that came with his face's deformation. But Christine - the Chorus girl in the novel - fells in love with his mysterious talent, not with the Phantom himself. When I first decided to direct it in Egypt, every one advised me not to, for the amazing previous performances of the same production of Broadway. Still, I was determined to go ahead with it, but how was I supposed to accomplish this task with a team of university students? Believe it or not, that was the real challenge! We received full support by Prof. Nawal ElDegwi – the Head of MSA board of trustees - who is a true believer in fine arts. Prof. Nawal ElDegwi accompanied the theatrical group all through rehearsals, supporting and motivating MSA students. A great help came from the spirit of the amazing, talented, enthusiastic and ambitious students of MSA's theatrical group, and from the talented drama instructor, prof. Noha Amin, who provided a great effort in the production. Finally, we did it in Egypt! Our performance was the first musical production in the Middle-East carried out by university students, that ran for four nights at the main hall of the Cairo Opera House, under the patronage of Her Excellency Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak - the first lady of Egypt. Our revenue was donated to the Egyptian charity project "Contribute in Building 100 Schools", because we really believe in community service. In the cultural department of MSA University, we offer our students the possibility to display their talents, developing their characters and enlarging their skills through performances in the MSA Roman Theatre, the MSA Opera House and the Cairo Opera House. The opportunity that we have to participate to the cultural "Universo Teatro" festival is a great honor and a marvelous opportunity to meet different cultures and different university students. So, throughout this musical performance, I promise you that you will be surprised by the amazing theatrical group of MSA university students… and, believe it or not, the Phantom exists!
